Over 600 students and around sixty teachers from 21 Catalan schools came together today at the Cotxeres de Sants Civic Centre to commemorate Europe Day at an event packed with educational, participatory and recreational activities.

Sant Ignasi has been part of the European Parliament Ambassador Schools programme since 2023 and this year is the third in a row that the gathering has been held to celebrate Europe Day.

The event kicked off at 9.30 am and brought together students from towns all over the region including Barcelona, Lleida, Tarragona, Terrassa, Sabadell, Sant Cugat del Vallés, Igualada, Moià, Salt and Roses. Its purpose was to encourage young people to think about the role of the European Union and its democratic values.

The programme included a video message from Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, and a live recording of the 3cat programme “LOFT” hosted by Berta Aroca, Gal·la Castelltort and Alberto Gadel. At 11.30 am, Salvador Illa, the First Minister of Catalonia, spoke to the attendees, and he was followed by a workshop on democracy, artificial intelligence and disinformation led by science populariser Pere Estupinyà.

The event was rounded off with a rendition of the Anthem of Europe by the choir of Torre del Palau High School in Terrassa and also featured Learn to Check project workshops designed to foster critical thinking and combat disinformation.

This year, Catalonia has 14 Ambassador Schools and eight Mentor Schools. Over 2,000 schools and 35,000 students are taking part in the initiative across Europe.

Europe Day commemorates the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950, the genesis of the European integration project which has led to today's European Union.

This event underscores the importance of peace, cooperation and shared values among European countries.
