“A Tree for Europe” during the exchange with Zone College

As part of the Global Citizenship project on sustainability we are doing for the third year with Zone College in Twello in the Netherlands in partnership with Team Europe and as a European Parliament Ambassador School, this year we have planted five trees (three olive trees and two quince trees) in the school's nature classroom. The trees symbolise our resolve to have a greener, healthier environment and take care of nature one small step at a time.

This is the third year of the exchange with Zone College, a project which rounds off all the sustainability learning we deliver at Sant Ignasi. It is an Erasmus+ project which explores the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and compares how different countries, in this case Spain and the Netherlands, deal with issues such as social justice, water use and climate change. This exchange project is funded by Erasmus+.

The event kicked off with a talk about the Sustainable Development Goals by Team Europe. Afterwards, the trees were planted in the school's nature classroom.

The initiative has also been backed by the More Sustainable Schools network which gave us the trees.

Since 2013, the school has been part of this More Sustainable Schools network, a programme run by Barcelona City Council which provides support and guidance to schools that are members of the More Sustainable Barcelona Network and looking to meet the challenges of sustainability. The Greener Sant Ignasi Committee, made up of teachers, students, the parents' association and management team, facilitates sustainability-related activities advised by this network.

This exchange project also featured a visit to the Llobregat Desalination Plant, sustainability workshops at CosmoCaixa and Torre Glòries, a trail to explore Montseny, working on our ecological footprint and the importance of small steps, and finding out more about the SDGs.
